National Public Data Breach

by Artie Kaye

National Public Data is a company that provides information for background checks. It was breached late 2023-early 2024 by bad actors and they exfiltrated approximately 2.9 billion records. Included in these records are full names, addresses, past addresses, email addresses, social security numbers, and phone numbers. The information could be used for nefarious purposes such as identity theft, financial fraud, or stalking. With the size of this breach it is recommended to take action to protect yourself.

Steps to take to protect yourself if you were part of this breach:

  • Freeze your credit, this will prevent anything being taken out in your name until you unfreeze it.
  • Update passwords and security questions on your accounts.
  • Stay alert for phone calls seeking any financial information. Do not give out any information to anyone that calls you. Also be aware of phishing, do not click on any links sent to you from unknown sources, or any link asking you to login or to pay a bill. Go to the website proper or call the company directly from their website’s listed phone number, or in the instance of a bank, the back of your credit card.

To see if your information was involved, https://npd.pentester.com/ has been setup to allow you to quickly find out.
