Hackers Exploit Snail Mail to Distribute Malicious QR Codes

by Justin Erickson

Cybercriminals are now using traditional mail to carry out cyberattacks, sending malicious QR codes directly to victims’ homes. These QR codes are disguised as legitimate-looking mail, prompting victims to scan a QR code. When scanned, the codes direct recipients to a 3rd party site prompting them to download an official looking weather app that installs malware and steals sensitive banking information. While this scam is taking place in Switzerland, security experts advise caution when scanning QR codes received via mail, as it may be replicated outside the country in the not-so-distant future. Users should verify the authenticity of the senders and avoid interacting with QR codes from unsolicited or unexpected letters.
