Google Adds Gmail’s E2EE To Mobile Devices

by Justin Erickson

Google has expanded Gmail’s end-to-end encryption capability to Android and iOS. The rollout applies to Gmail client-side encryption (CSE) users – which is part of Google Workspace rather than standard consumer Gmail accounts. Google Workspace Enterprise level users will be able to compose, read, and reply to encrypted messages directly inside the Gmail mobile app – no separate app or external mail portal required. If the recipient uses the Gmail app, the message appears in the inbox as a normal thread; if the recipient does not, they can read and reply securely through their native browser. This extends Google’s earlier desktop rollout by bringing the same end-to-end encryption to mobile devices. Google says, “This launch combines the highest level of privacy and data encryption with a user-friendly experience for all users, enabling simple encrypted email for all customers from small businesses to enterprises and public sector.”
