Firefox Adds A Free Built-In Browser VPN In its 149 Update, With A 50GB Monthly Cap
by Justin Erickson
Mozilla has rolled out a built-in VPN in Firefox 149 that provides up to 50GB of traffic per month for users signed in with a Mozilla account. The tool works as a browser-only secure proxy, meaning it protects traffic inside Firefox, not all traffic on a device – and can be limited to specific sites to conserve data. Mozilla launched this VPN in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and France on March 24th, 2026. Mozilla says some websites and essential services are excluded from VPN routing to avoid sign-in issues and to help VPN reconnection work properly. The routing server is based in the United States and caters the best user experience based on location and performance. Tom’s Guide shows how to enable it:
- Open Firefox and go to Menu, then Help, then About Firefox to update to version 149 or later.
- Sign in to your Mozilla account, or create one for free.
- Look for the VPN or IP Protection toggle in your toolbar or under Menu, then Settings.
- Click once to enable it (no additional setup needed).
- To save data, you can choose to enable protection on specific sites only.
If the option isn’t showing yet, sit tight: it should appear within the coming days as the rollout continues.
