Bitcoin ATM Operator Byte Federal Breach Exposes Data of 58,000 Users
by Justin Erickson
Byte Federal, a major Bitcoin ATM operator, has disclosed a data breach affecting the personal information of 58,000 users. Attackers exploited a vulnerability in a third-party software platform called GitLab – used by the developers for project management and collaboration – to gain unauthorized access to sensitive data. This data included names, email addresses, phone numbers, social security numbers, and more. There is no evidence that the information has been used for any malicious activity, but users are advised to monitor their account activity for anything suspicious. This breach highlights the growing cybersecurity risks facing cryptocurrency service providers. Byte Federal has since performed a hard reset on all customer accounts and updated its internal passwords.
